Visitors to the Cabrillo National Monument can tour this lighthouse. The light is almost a twin to the Point Pinos light a little further north.
Old Point Loma has a very interesting history. Because it was built high on a bluff, too often the beam of light shown over the fog
covered waters below and was not a dependable guide to the captians on the water. Thus it was used only for 36 years; a very brief time
in the histories of lighthouses. The New Point Loma lighthouse sets just above sea level and does an excellent job of guiding boats and ships into the bay.
